Is HackerTube’s source code available?
In the launch discussion, the creator distinguishes the unpublished server from the data archive others can use. A third-party implementation does not become the original codebase because it uses that archive. This answer records the checked release evidence rather than asserting that no source could ever be published later.
Is HackerTube’s dataset open for reuse?
The export documentation identifies the data license as ODC-By v1.0 and supplies attribution instructions. Read that license and the included documentation before redistribution. The data release does not grant ownership of YouTube videos or automatically cover every external service you use to enrich a new application.
What is in the downloadable release?
- Video records and retained discussion mentions.
- A taxonomy and relationships between videos.
- Embedding files for compatible semantic retrieval.
The documentation excludes video files and several YouTube metrics, including duration and view counts. Karpathy also noted that YouTube data could not simply be redistributed with the archive. Rebuilding an interface therefore requires your own implementation and, where needed, separately obtained metadata.
Does HackerTube have an official GitHub repository?
No official application repository was identified in the creator sources checked on November 3, 2026. The author said the server had not been published. The community Apple TV implementation describes itself as based on the idea; it is not the original server code or proof of an official release. Check repository ownership and licensing separately from the data export.
