Sources, Data and Limitations

The directory is built from a dated public export. This page records where it came from, what each signal means and which conclusions the data does not support.

How FAQ answers are maintained

The independent operator of HackerTube Explorer maintains these English and Chinese answers. “Content updated” dates the editorial text; it does not mean every device, region or video was tested that day. Checks of changing features state their date and scope in the relevant answer.

Project history uses the creator’s announcement; selection and classification use the export documentation. Search, saving and local-state explanations refer to the original web controls and client behavior. Catalog examples establish presence in the snapshot, not a full viewing review or quality certification. Answers about absent official apps, repositories or submission routes are limited to the sources checked, not an exhaustive search of every channel.

Our suggested learning paths and personal checks are separate from original-product facts. Unmeasured outcomes are not reported as results. Use the correction contact with a page URL and the statement that needs checking.

Data version used here

  • Snapshot date: October 31, 2026
  • 6,454 video records
  • 39,834 retained comment–video mention pairs
  • 150 categories in 16 broad areas

This version was last checked for the current site build on November 2, 2026. It is a fixed snapshot rather than a live feed from YouTube or Hacker News.

License and attribution

The export is released under the Open Data Commons Attribution License (ODC-By) v1.0. Credit belongs to HackerTube and the open-index/hacker-news dataset. Hacker News data is provided by Y Combinator; comments remain the work of their authors. Video titles and channel names belong to their creators.

How inclusion works

The source documentation says a video entered the dataset after at least three different people mentioned it in at least three different months. A model then labeled retained mentions as strong recommendations, recommendations, references, jokes or criticism. Only positive labels count as recommenders in this interface.

What this site changes

The Explorer converts the export into browser search files, adds English and Chinese navigation, writes topic explanations, and orders a small number of source records into focused watch paths. Those editorial additions are kept separate from the imported fields. Missing YouTube metrics are not invented, and the original data is not presented as if it were produced by this site.

Known limits

At most twenty mentions are retained per video. Comment text is truncated. Categories, summaries, levels and stances were generated with language models and can contain errors. Duplicate uploads of the same talk may remain. YouTube duration, views, likes, publication date and current availability are not included in the export.

Independent status

HackerTube Explorer is not affiliated with Andrej Karpathy, YouTube, Google, Hacker News or Y Combinator. The original HackerTube site is hackertube.org.
